Reflections on Workplace Violence in Healthcare

In the recent episode, “Confronting Workplace Violence,” of the Associates Bringing Value podcast, an American Health Association (AHA) podcast series, I discussed the critical issue of workplace violence in healthcare and how to help protect healthcare workers, patients, and visitors. Drawing from my experiences in law enforcement, leadership at Mercy Healthcare, and my current role with Evolv Technology, we explored the unique challenges of healthcare settings and strategies designed to prevent violence. From analyzing data to leveraging AI-driven tools, the conversation highlighted the importance of creating a safer environment for those dedicated to patient care.

Healthcare workers face increasing threats, including physical acts, verbal abuse, and mental harassment, all of which impact their well-being and care quality. At Mercy, we used data to identify high-risk individuals and areas, implementing proactive strategies supported by AI technologies like facial recognition and sound intelligence. Prevention remains the most effective approach, but it requires collaboration, innovation, and a commitment to addressing these challenges head-on.

At Evolv Technology, we’re proud to support healthcare systems with cutting-edge tools that are designed to intercept dangerous items before they enter facilities. With over 800 Evolv Express units in use across 400 hospitals, these technologies help provide safety and peace of mind to staff and patients. While the ROI of prevention can be hard to measure, its impact on fostering a secure, healing environment is undeniable. By continuing to innovate and prioritize safety, we can protect healthcare workers and create spaces where healing thrives.

Tune in to hear the full discussion I had with Kathleen Wessel, Vice President of Business Management and Operations at AHA.
