Introducing Evolv eXpedite™: The Future of High-Throughput Bag Scanning

We started Evolv because it was clear that many security professionals responsible for high- capacity venues like stadiums, schools, hospitals, and other locations wanted to create a safer environment but with a different tool set than airport, courthouses, and prisons. At the core of this belief is that security shouldn’t have to come at the expense of visitor experience. This understanding drove the creation of Evolv Express® in 2019. Evolv Express is designed to screen visitors effectively for potential threats, while helping minimize congestion and disruptions to traffic flow at ingress points.
As we all know, no two venues are exactly alike. Some have thousands of visitors who arrive carrying just pocket clutter and purses. Others have thousands who arrive packed for an expedition to Mt Everest. And most are somewhere in between. The Evolv Express is ideal for the first scenario. We’re now launching Evolv eXpedite™, to support the others.
Evolv eXpedite is our latest product – purpose-built for fast-paced, high-throughput environments like schools during the morning rush, office buildings at peak entry times, and warehouse entrances during shift changes. Evolv eXpedite quickly and automatically detects many potential threats carried in bags, using the latest advancements in AI and X-ray imaging. We also recognize that very few venues employ security staff trained to interpret an X-ray image, so we’ve eliminated that requirement.
Many traditional bag scanners are designed for lower throughput applications where trained operators have to scrutinize x-ray images to search for potential threats. Some of these systems have since been retrofitted with hardware and software upgrades to boost their intelligence with computer vision or AI, but they remain reliant on human intervention. Evolv eXpedite breaks away from this model, designed from the ground up as an AI-powered weapons detection system for bags, built to meet the demands of today’s fast-moving venues.

The threat environment has fundamentally changed since the specs for screening technology were written, some as far back as 1974! Ask yourself – what other technology in your life is designed based on fifty-year-old requirements? In addition, many modern venues like schools, office buildings, tourist locations and entertainment centers require a completely different set of solutions compared to airports or courthouses. The challenge lies in balancing security with speed, convenience, and visitor experience.

This is not just about making a conveyor belt run faster; it’s about how the entire system—from electronics to software—works together to help detect potential threats efficiently, while handling over 2,000 bags per hour. All without the need to add security staff trained to interpret X-ray images.

Evolv eXpedite was built from scratch with cutting-edge AI technology. We took a “clean sheet of paper” approach, allowing us to fully leverage today’s AI capabilities instead of relying on outdated designs.
Currently, eXpedite focuses on detecting potential threats like firearms, knives, and IED components. But the beauty of AI is its ability to be trained and evolve over time. As we advance our AI algorithms, eXpedite detection will continue to grow. Our goal is to expand the system’s capabilities to identify and help prevent other prohibited items such as vapes, alcohol, and other contraband, further reinforcing its versatility in various environments.

Founder, Chief Innovation Officer
Michael Ellenbogen co-founded Evolv with Anil Chitkara in July 2013 and has been Evolv’s Head of Advanced Technology since January 2020. Prior to assuming his current role at Evolv, Mr. Ellenbogen served as the Company’s Chief Executive Officer from August 2013 to January 2020. Prior to co-founding Evolv, Mr. Ellenbogen was the Founder, President and Chief Executive Officer of Reveal Imaging Technologies, an X-ray imaging systems company focusing on automated explosives detection, from 2002 to 2010. Prior to joining Reveal, Mr. Ellenbogen was the Vice President of Research & Development and Business Development of PerkinElmer Detection Systems, a provider of X-ray-based security technologies, from 1994 to 2002. During his 25 plus year career in the security industry, Mr. Ellenbogen has proven his expertise in product and business development, as well as stakeholder value creation. In addition, Mr. Ellenbogen is an inventor with 19 awarded patents. Mr. Ellenbogen received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from Colgate University.
