Spartanburg School District Five Builds a Lasting Partnership and a Layered Entry Process with Evolv Express® and Evolv eXpedite™

Spartanburg School District Five serves more than 10,000 students across multiple campuses, with thousands arriving on campus within a short morning window each day. As enrollment grew, the district recognized the need to evolve its entry process in a way that was consistent, efficient, and easy for students and staff to navigate. Working closely with district leadership, Ryan Cothran, Director of Safety & Emergency Services, helped guide a multi‑year effort to evaluate existing practices, pilot new technology, and build a layered, district‑wide approach to morning arrival. This case study outlines how Spartanburg School District Five designed a routine that improved flow at busy entrances, supported staff across roles, and became a predictable part of the school day for the entire community. Through implementing Evolv Express® back in 2021, then upgrading to Gen 2, as well as enhancing their bag screening experience with Evolv eXpedite™:
- 92.2% of students felt neutral or positive about the system
- 90.5% of school staff and 92.4% of contracted security rated the system as user friendly
- The average alert rate based on over 336,000+ bags screened with Evolv eXpedite at Byrnes High School between October 2025 and March 2026 was 1.5%
